EATING DISORDER VOCABULARY
Eating Disorder: The consumption of food in an unhealthy way; these mental illnesses are often extreme and damaging eating behaviors that can lead to sickness and even death if left untreated. These disorders typically have little to do with hunger - often they are brought on by mental/emotional problems such as depression or low self-esteem; an unhealthy relationship with food
Malnutrition: A condition caused by a diet lacking one or more essential nutrients.
Anorexia: An eating disorder brought about by an extreme pursuit of thinness characterized by self-starvation, excessive weight loss, compulsive exercise regimen, and an intense fear of gaining weight.
Bulimia: An eating disorder characterized by episodes of binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting and/or the misuse of laxatives or diuretics.
Binge-Eating Disorder: An eating disorder in which a person regularly has an uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food, but without purging.
Body Dysmorphia: A chronic mental illness in which an individual cannot stop thinking about a flaw in their appearance — a flaw that is either minor or imagined.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): An anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and/or actions (compulsions)
Self-Esteem: A measure of how much you value and respect yourself; one's feelings of high or low self-worth.
Body Image: The way a person thinks his or her body looks, which may or may not be the way it actually does look.
Binge: Indulging in something to excess, such as eating or drinking
Purge: To eject the contents of the stomach through the mouth; cleanse; purify, to rid the body of
Lanugo: A soft downy hair that forms on the body as an attempt to improve altered core temp regulation because of loss of body fat.
Laxatives: Medications or foods given to stimulate bowel movements.
Diuretics: Drugs that eliminate fluid (usually water) by increasing urine output by the kidneys resulting in weight loss.
"Chipmunk Cheeks": A condition caused from repeated vomiting where the cheek glands actually expand and is usually associated with bulimia.
Obesity: A condition of having excess body fat resulting in being greatly overweight.
Anemia: A lack of iron in the blood caused by nutrient deficiencies from poor eating habits; lack of vitality or energy (-)
Osteoporosis: A condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily usually due to lack of calcium or poor eating habits.
Body Mass Index (BMI): A ratio that allows you to assess your body size in relation to your height and weight.
Medical Professionals: A group of highly educated professionals that would help in the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders which may include mental health therapists, nutritionists, and counselors.
